What do you get when you cross R.E.M. guitarist and part-time Todos Santos resident Peter Buck with the legendary Hotel California? Answer: the best music festival in Baja. No, the Eagles weren’t there, but as he did a year ago for the inaugural event, rock star Buck assembled an incredible collection of musical talent for the 2nd annual concert series, which was held over three weekends in January.
This year’s festival was a huge success by any standards, drawing some of the music industry’s most talented performers, including The Posies, English legend Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3, Steve Wynn and the Baseball Project, Chuck Prophet’s Mission Express, The Elected, Kev’n Kinney, Alejandro Escovedo, American rockers Scott McCaughey’s The Minus 5, and the locally beloved Mexican indie group Torreblanca. Proceeds benefited the Todos Santos’ Palapa Society.
If you didn’t make the 2013 edition of the Todos Santos Music Festival, you’ll definitely want to attend in 2014, with a whole new roster of top-notch musical talent on tap courtesy of R.E.M’s Peter Buck. For information about the best local accommodations, visit www.CalyCanto.com.
We look forward to rocking out with you in Todos Santos!

Jim,
Do you know whether or not dates have been announced for the 2014 Todos Santos Music Festival? We had a great time this year’s festival in January, and then came back to Todos Santos in July, staying at CalyCanto for the first time. We are anxiously looking forward to our next visit.

Seems like there’s a lot going on this year for Peter Buck and they may take a year off. It pretty much takes a year of planning. I suspect they’ll be back stronger than ever in 2015. Doesn’t mean you can’t have fun in 2014 but I agree. It’s a very special event.
Cheers,
Jim
Jim,
Thanks for the reply. My understanding is that Peter Buck married his long-time girlfriend Chloe Johnson over the summer. He’s certainly entitled to some down time! Will the festival go on without him in 2014, or is it taking the year off along with him?

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. No festival in 2014. We’re all hoping/assuming he’ll be back in 2015.
Cheers,
jim
Thanks for the clarification, Jim. We’ll be coming to Todos Santos regardless. In a way, this gives us a little more flexibility as far as when we get to escape the New England winter for a week or so.

The door’s always open! Planning my next trip as well. A bit of post-storm clean-up underway for the entire town.
I was going to ask how you fared. According to the Baja Nomad forum, Todos Santos ended up with quite a bit of damage. We have a friend in La Poza who mentioned a wild night with wind and horizontal rain. Hopefully that’s it for the season.
Was worse than I think everyone expected in Todos. Many described it as the worst storm in 10+ years even though it wasn’t a hurricane. A lot depends on the angle it hits and where it hits. Everyone’s watching Cabo but a few miles away can be worse.
